The archaeological site of Tamasos is situated in the central part of the island, at Politiko village in Nicosia. Tamasos is known as one of the ancient city-kingdoms of Cyprus but it is still unknown when it was established (8th c. BC). The town prospered until the Roman period due to the exploitation of the rich copper deposits found at the surrounding area.
Tomb 2 was discovered in 1890 by the first German Archaeological Expedition in Cyprus, directed by Max Ohnefalsch-Richter. It is dated in the Cypro-Archaic II period (600-475 BC). This interesting Royal Tomb was found together with other 2 tombs, but today only one is preserved.
Both tombs are subterranean and built with ashlar blocks of local stone and their construction imitates a form of wooden houses with gables. Tomb 2 is the larger of the two, and has a stepped dromos, a kind of porch, or propylaeum and two funeral chambers.
